Traces of former mechanical cleaning; some scratches. Fields gently smoothed. Possibly tooled. Exceptional specimen, very rare in this condition.  From a private European collection formed in the 1980s.

LUCANIA. Velia. Circa 400-340 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 22 mm, 7.55 g, 6 h). Lion crouching right; in exergue, owl perched right on olive branch, head facing. Rev. YΕΛ-ΗΤΩΝ Head of nymph to right. HN Italy 1275 var (B above). Williams Period IV, 216 (O131/R162). SNG ANS 1228 (same dies). SNG Copenhagen 1526 (same dies). Rare variant struck from slightly worn dies, otherwise very fine.
